This article establishes a relationship between La Guzla and Serbian popular songs by setting Mérimée’s book in the context of how Serbian popular poetry was received in France and in Serbia. This perspective illuminates the similarities and differences between the poems in this collection, most of which were made up from scratch, and genuine Serbian popular songs.
