Upon its initial performance, a few critics wrote brief analyses of the Supplément, recognizing the play as a satire, but often as an unsophisticated one. Later productions in 1945 and 1962 provoked few new critical perspectives, and it was not until the 1970s that the concept emerged of a subversive Giraudoux, whose playful yet biting satire of colonialism was in fact highly culturally relevant.
