Électre marks the culmination of a certain conception of the “theater of the text,” with the result that it is largely rejected by the major contemporary French theaters. The present study considers the production staged in 1996 by Claudia Morin, which was conceived as a reflection of the main tendencies of contemporary theatrical production. We demonstrate the inventions, renunciations, and compromises used by this production to bring Giraudoux’s play to life, and we consider this production’s handling of the play’s difficulties to be the most promising approach for the future of Giraudoux’s work in the theater.
