What do we see in the image? The image makes present the absent object. But can it obscure its object? Do we not also see our own reflection in it, is it not also often a “beautifying mirror” in which man comforts himself in spite of reality? Engaging with Kundera’s novels, this study elucidates the link between kitsch and the image, showing which attributes and functions of the image make it the main resource of the Kitsch-Man (Kitschmensch).
