Alberto Giacometti had to abandon representation according to mimetic laws and dedicated himself to Surrealism from 1925 to 1935. He embraced the production of pure images which means images that stage more images, i.e. phantasms of the unconscious. But he decided to return to live models and thus to portraits which made him stumble upon the enigma of the otherness. Given the absolute character of this otherness, one is not able to reduce it to an image.
