The question of self is haunting the evolution of our culture. One of its recent forms is that of identity. The disputes around this subject are endless because it is not clear what we are talking about: identities are pledged as signs of belonging under menace. But we do not admit that cultural identities are marked by historicity. Cultural identities are not subject to relativism but to responsibility stemming from their singularity.
Keywords: self, me, identity, individuality, historicity.
374Emmanuelle Bruyas, “Walking, the Pathway of Thought”
Walking in nature offers a chance to be fully present within ourselves, to deploy our thinking freely and to confront ourselves with the resources of the body. It allows us to find slowness, time for thinking and writing. It requires our ability to go to meet nature and ourselves. Walking can thus bring an essential breath to our existence, to the source of inspiration and, more broadly, a spiritual exercise.
Keywords: walk, nature, thought, body, attention.
Ciprian Vălcan, “The Empire and the Barbarians”
Ciprian Vălcan proposes a ruthless look at the opposition between the great empires and barbarians, as well as an ironic reflection on the subtle connection between truth and falsehood.
Keywords: Savonarola, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, Napoleon, Bartleby.
Michel Orcel, “To the Memory of Mario Andrea Rigoni”

Keywords: Rigoni, Cioran, poetry, despair, aphorism.
Shen-Ping Wang, “From the Field of Consciousness to the Field of Events. A Total Deconstruction of the Subjectivity”
Reflecting on the genesis of individual being, Deleuze takes Sartre’s transcendental field of consciousness as a starting point, develops his version of this concept: a field of events that is not individual nor personal, and which, according to him, does not resemble what it is supposed to found. This article deals with his critique of the form of subjectivity imposed of the individuation and his proposition of the transcendental field for the individual being which brings along with it an ontology of becoming.
Keywords: deconstruction of the ego, consciousness, individuation, event, singularity.
Jean-Claude Vuillemin, “Self-concern, Appropriation and Restoration”
According to Foucault, Descartes ultimately confirmed the prevalence of the Delphic injunction “know thyself” (gnôthi seauton) over a precept which had previously ruled supreme: the “care of the self” (epimeleia heautou). This does not imply that 376philosophy cannot renew with its former status when the Self played a prevalent part. This article argues in favor of a philosophy in which the Self would invent itself through a reciprocal harmony between logos (discourses) and ergon (actions).
Keywords: Foucault, care of the self, knowledge of the self, Cynics, Descartes, parrêsia, modernity.
The Communication of the Ego According to Søren Kierkegaard”
A study that Søren Kierkegaard devotes to the notion of the tragic leads us to show how the question of the ego can arise correlatively to the dimension of the secret. Far from being the effect of an attempt of dissimulation, this secret dimension of the self engages a reflection on the concept of subjective truth, which is the foundation of Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy of existence.
Keywords: ego, subjectivity, truth, secret, culpability.
377Franck Colotte, “Self-Portrait in Flaubert’s Correspondence. From the Ego dolens to the Ego furens”
In his extensive correspondence, Gustave Flaubert expresses a number of opinions and writes his fantasised autobiography, which he stages by directly involving his authorial self in epistolary situations where captatio benevolentiae leads him to put forward either a suffering self or a self experiencing strong emotions. He thus seeks to create an epistolary identity for himself, to create a “Flaubert” trademark.
Keywords: correspondence, writer’s identity, self-concern, health, anger.
Gianluca Leoncini, “‘Who Am I?’. Itineraries of the Self with André Breton”
“Who am I?” asks Breton in the opening of Nadja, but what he really means is “Who am I haunting?”. With self-knowledge being a pursuit, the appeal of the street proves too strong to resist. Through the analysis of experiences that change the self profoundly or give it a completely different configuration, we will examine to what extent this confident stroller manages to reach, in his deepest essence, that point where the opposites cease to be contradictions.
Keywords: surrealism, André Breton, quest, pursuit, Self.
378Saber Idoudi, “The Valeryan Self between Kantianism and Nihilism”
The Valeryan self is a simple condition of knowledge which serves to ensure the unity of consciousness. Empty and unknowable, it is almost identical to Kant’s transcendental subject. Under the impulse of his nihilistic inclination, Valéry denies this influence and ends up destroying the unity of his ego by carrying out multiple divisions.
Keywords: Valéry, self, Kantianism, negation, knowledge.
Imen Kacem, “The Identity Groping. The Self, from Shadow to Light”
In the novel Curtain! French Chronicle of the 20th century by Paul Vialar, the narrator’s ego is vague and indecisive. It is the theatrical art discovery that saves the narrator until he encounters another form of threat that destabilizes him once again. The double’s appearance puts this character once again face to his failings. However, behind the curtain of experience, a scene takes place behind the scenes of the narrator in order to ensure the construction of the new self.
Keywords: the self, the defect, the theater, the double, the scripture.
379Michel Dion, “The Dynamics of the Self in Yukio Mishima and Haruki Murakami”
Mishima was influenced by Mahāyāna Buddhism in his way to deal with the conscience of the self. Murakami was rather concerned with the capacity to deepen the knowledge of our own self. The dynamics of the self is centered either on interdependence (Mishima) or on the unconscious (Murakami).
Keywords: Yukio Mishima, Haruki Murakami, dynamics of the self.
Gert Valentijn, “I Here and Now. Philippe Jaccottet and the Crossing of a Mirror of the World”
Philippe Jaccottet gives a presence to the image and admires nature in which he has sought a spiritual adventure that touches on mystical experience. This experience points towards “natural” mysticism. He discovers haiku which has the ability to become a mirror of the world, which the poet crosses to unite the self and the world. This short form will undoubtedly have an influence on Jaccottet’s poetic experience and his way of expressing a mystical experience.
Keywords: Philippe Jaccottet, haïku, mysticism, presence, contemporary poetry.
380Alberto Russo Previtali, “The Ego and the Initiatory Experience. A Critical Reading of Luigia Sorrentino’s Olimpia”
The essay proposes a critical reading of the book of poetry titled Olimpia through the description of the poetical Ego, conceived in its dilatation and mediation process. In the allegorical scene of the city-woman Olympia, the speech of the Ego is interpreted as a will to testify the initiatory experience.
Keywords: Orphic poetry, expanded Ego, initiatory experience, allegorical scene, poetical testimony.
Stéphane Cermakian, “From the Inverted Alter Ego to the Chimera-Self. Mélusine, André Breton and Armenia”
The poet’s quest for identity is realized in André Breton’s works through a projection on a female figure which takes the form of the fairy Mélusine in the poetic story Arcane 17. However, his rewriting of the myth is part of an Armenian constellation which is constituting itself in the life of the poet at the same time. The search for the inverted alter ego leads to the chimera-self through which we can hear the echo of the founder of Lusignan’s kingdom.
Keywords: Armenia, André Breton, fairy Mélusine, alter ego, chimera-self.
Alexandre Gascoin, “The I and the We. Rebuilding Singularity Through Cultural Community”
In an age in which identity claims are more present than ever, the idea of individuality seems – paradoxically – threatened, as if the growing importance of the “we” inescapably entailed the destruction of the “I”. However, should we really have to choose between an “authentic” singularity and a “encompassing” collectivity? The philosophy of multiculturalism may provide an interesting alternative to such an ongoing battle between the individual and its community.
Keywords: cultural identity, self-identity, community, multiculturalism, authenticity.

Ger Groot, « La joie franciscaine d’Eugène van Itterbeek »
384Ger Groot, “The Franciscan Joy of Eugène van Itterbeek”
Eugène van Itterbeek knew the works of Emil Cioran inside out, but their attitudes towards life were completely opposite. Van Itterbeek’s view on its good and beautiful aspects were in direct contradiction to Cioran’s pessimism. What they had in common, however, was the recognition of everyday reality as a revelation of the truths of life and the ‘ethics of precision’ as an ethics of writing.
