Fires and Sanctuary Building Sites During Antiquity Three Case Studies: Autun, Vieil-Évreux and Genainville

This article examines the relationship between fires and sanctuary construction sites in pre-Roman and Roman times, based on recent archaeological data from three case studies: the temple of Janus in Autun, the temple of Genainville, and the sanctuary of Vieil-Évreux. The identification of hearths and dense layers of ash attest to the existence of voluntary fires following a previous state of occupation, forming an integral part of the demolition and reconstruction process.
