Although he cannot be presumed to have any particular sympathy for the nobility, Huysmans nevertheless uses some of their values to discuss the status of artists in a democratic regime. Yet, his taste for aristocratic distinction does not contradict his yearning for the popular, the two coming together in a shared disgust for the modern world and in their attachment to the past.
