It is generally understood that with Guy de Maupassant, the fantastic as a genre relinquished haunted worlds in favour of haunted selves. Complicating such assumptions, this study draws on Schopenhauer to look at the negative ontology and cosmology that were foundational to Maupassant’s body of work.
