AB  - It is essential to analyse the American mountaineers’ discourse and its cultural background if one is to become acquainted with the milieu and its actors. This paper analyses to what extent the terminology of mountaineering has been influenced by the culture of mountaineers, whether by means of terms borrowed from foreign languages or simply coined over time. The analysis confirms the hypothesis that terms can be considered as windows opening out onto the culture of a professional community.
