AB  - Alberti’s De commodis litterarum atque incommodis, his literary debut in the world of Quattrocento humanism, is a manifesto that announces themes that are central to Alberti’s conception of himself as a writer. By examining the social and literary context of Alberti’s essay, the present study notes intertextual links with works of Petrarch and Lapo da Castiglionchio, and with Leonardo Bruni’s translation of Xenophon’s Hiero.
