AB  - Although Jules Verne claimed in Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) that he did not want to be political, a political dimension can still be detected in the novel and in the character Nemo. There are many identifiable signs of the author’s sympathies for the French Republic. But the ambiguous nature of Nemo, at once a champion of liberty and true despot, reveals the uncertainties of the author in an era of marked decline from the enthusiasm of the Revolution to the disenchantment of the Bonapartist coup.
