AB  - Written in a climate of despair caused by the horrors of the First World War, The Theory of the Novel is a step in the genesis of the aesthetic thought of its author; it is by no means a culmination of it. The opening up of new perspectives from the October Revolution then allowed Lukács to go further, glimpsing the eclipse of the novel first in critical realism and then in Socialist realism.
