AB  - Attributing his own Les Amies to “Pablo de Herlagnez,” Paul Verlaine begins to speak or “habler” an “entre-deux-langues.” Such bilingual pseudocompetence—half correct, half barbarous—is a way of transforming the curse of Babel into an awkward but seemingly transparent and innocent game. The “innocence” of this translation-transcription of marital status is under question here, the suspicion being that this French-Spanish hybrid has a cryptographic aim (or at least effect).
