Born in a bourgeois Jewish family, of a Polish mother and a Ukrainian father, he grew up in Russia during the Revolution. An outstanding pianist, he arrived in France very young, ready for an international career. But instead, he started long studies. His parents, who returned to Poland, passed away in Auschwitz. He spent his life as a working-class suburban doctor, a fierce Resistance fighter, and a poet as prodigious as he was misunderstood.
