Is it the royal we of a Sovereign God, the complicit we of the divine emissary and the poet, or the collective we of humanity? Paradoxically, this semantic confusion seems to coerce the singular discourse “On Freedom” into a plurality of determinisms. The purpose here will be to redefine Voltairian freedom, not in the relationship of man to his divinity, but in that of the “we” to its own discursive conscience.
