AB  - This article aims to shed light on the main reasons that grant poetry, defined as language and as an institution, status as a resoundingly serious activity, thus making it always susceptible to slipping into a serious frame of mind. In the terrain of social anthropology, this work undertakes discussions of authority, from Romanticism to Mallarmé, before insisting on the forms that the serious takes in poetry. Last of all, it envisages the transformation processes by which the serious in poetry shifts into a serious frame of mind.
