AB  - This article tries to evaluate the nature and the scope of the contradictions between ME and HIM in their first debate. It becomes clear that the latter: 1) sets the essential themes of the work, 2) immediately tracks back to compare the Enlightenment and anti-Enlightenment, 3) ensures the victory of ME, 4) belies the popular idea that this is a directionless text, and 5) reveals the condemned usefulness of paraphrase.
