In Marivaux or Diderot, stylized direct discourse and narrative discourse denounce the insignificance of utterances, and even the failure of communication—whether it be the simple “noise” of gossip or philosophical debate. It evokes the idea that to speak is to do nothing . . . or to say nothing.
