Following Montaigne, Rousseau warns against “babbling education,” due to the distance that babbling creates between the word and the object. He also provides a moral argument (by encouraging children to talk excessively, one fosters in them excessive pride) and a phonetic argument (by babbling, children pronounce words unintelligibly).
