AB  - This article shows how, in Les trois messes basses by Alphonse Daudet, still life rises in power, unfolds magnified in the first mass, and disintegrates in the third. An ironic gourmand painting evoked in absentia, it encourages the confusion of the profane and the sacred and turns the world on its head. Still life corrupts the sacred rite, which becomes demonic. An unstable cultural space, still life opens a breach between the living and the dead and presents Dom Balaguère as a revenant.
