Textual criticism developed in the 13th century, and historical and geographical data were expanded. Spiritual exegesis played a major role, with anti-Jewish and anti-heretical interpretations and analyses of the world and the flesh. The problem of the Christic reading is also addressed. Commentaries from the 12th to the early 14th centuries are studied in particular.
