After an inventory of the diversity of sounds of the city or the countryside, we interpret their value when they signal the narrator. In Le Temps retrouvé, beyond their value as signals, some sounds (a spoon banging on a plate, the little bell of Combray) trigger involuntary memory and are associated with other sense impressions.
