The would-be Petrarch is humiliated by Laura, a Muse linked with Sade just as he is with a historical figure rumoured to be impotent. The end of the poem recalls Nattier’s portrait of Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesle showing her as Dawn pouring dew from a pitcher.
