AB  - Bertrand was not only inspired by Walter Scott when he wrote Daniel. Two German sources are also apparent: Goethe’s Faust and Schiller’s Die Räuber. The writer also follows the principles of the preface to Cromwell by making opposing registers coexist within the same work, in particular the grotesque and the pitiful.
