AB  - The influence of Hugo on La Fortune des Rougon is shown first in the way Zola considers the coup d’État. It is next evident in the depiction of the innocent love between Miette and Silvère, an echo of the love between Cosette and Marius. Finally, the play of oppositions structuring the novel recalls the processes of Hugolian antithesis. Differences, however, remain: Zola reduces the epic element, refuses any apology for Republican ideology, and insists on physiological determinations.
