While the principal narrative retraces their battle benevolently, insisting on their nobility during the December days, the novel also perpetuates the darker legends surrounding them through the medium of bourgeois characters, and describes them as monstrous assassins. With the same event provoking opposing images and interpretations, naturalism also engages with perspectives on reality and their political uses.
