AB  - The expansion of the realist aesthetic in the nineteenth century ensured the hegemony of novelistic description, on which works of literary theory and history naturally focused in the following century. But we have forgotten that numerous novelists, with a loyal readership and supported by recognised critics, sought to “write without describing”. This study draws out the theological, socio-political, and aesthetic reasons they put forward in order to justify their rejection of description.
