AB  - Speech from on-high was present in republican Rome, in particular at the Senate. It was characterised by the auctoritas, a properly Roman notion which legitimised the hierarchy of speaking at senatorial sessions. This authority was necessary for the speaker to ensure the validity of his discourse. Cicero has explained its codes of fabrication at the moral and social level, and also from the point of view of rhetorical performance and stylistic technique.
