With La Marcheuse, Samar Yazbek, a politically committed writer and “spokesperson for the Syrian hellscape,” takes us into the swampy maze of the civil war, through her character’s fantastical journey. While this journey may seem surreal, the novelist assures us that there is nothing extreme about the fiction when compared to the violence of the war.
