The Moroccan narrator-character’s viewpoint leads to ironic comments that conceal the contingencies of exile in humor. This article addresses the use of parentheses, wordplay, languages, and multiple references that either deconstruct or confirm the stereotypes that generally accompany the description of a foreign nation.
