AB  - I first investigate how, in the Exercitationes, Gassendi redefined, against Aristotle, the limits and methods of metaphysics. I then analyze the materialist arguments on the human soul that he used against Descartes in the Disquisitio metaphysica. I finally show how, in the Syntagma philosophicum, he devised an empiricist metaphysics in order to produce a philosophical conception of God and of the human immaterial soul.
