AB  - Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700–1766) spent his whole life working to promote the French libertines in Germany through the translation of their main works. Alongside the translation of Dictionnaire historique et critique (1741–1744), in 1741 he directed that of Pensées diverses (1683), and that of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s Theodicy in 1744. With Pierre Bayle, Gottsched fought superstition and sought to promote tolerance and freedom of worship.
