AB  - This study focuses on ­Simon’s third novel, which looks at a series of failures, including the defeat of the Spanish Revolution as well as the woes of an idealistic adolescent who wants to be rational but who fails in every way. ­Bernard’s difficult relationship with his stepfather illustrates one of the many succession crises strewn throughout the novel. Succession is also studied at the level of the intertextual allusions that the novelist makes to other writers.
