AB  - The study shows the exceptional notoriety of Jeremy Bentham in Latin America during the years 1820. When the new republics rose as independent nations, Bentham engaged himself in an intense intellectual and political activity. Through his projects and legislative writings, he appeared at the same time as an expert and a social reformer where governments would set up constitutions based on the principle of greatest happiness of the greatest number. The emblematic model of this utilitarian Utopia was the inter-oceanic project of channel through Panama.
