Although it originated in the early Middle Ages, it was not popular outside Italy before the sixteenth century. However, nearly one hundred years earlier, in the Iberian Peninsula, Iñigo López de Mendoza, composed more than forty sonnets “in the Italian style”, echoing the concerns and tastes of his Italian contemporaries: he is thus a pioneer in Spain.
