First, I’ll sketch Coleridge’s political values by stressing his commitment in topical issues from 1800 to 1816 ; this allows me to show the importance of factual contingencies in his political thought, which defines democracy as a political unity made of interpenetration of different powers and necessity of counterpoises. Then, in a second part, I’ll examine the same democratic values in poetics: prose functions like the State and is based on the differentiated union of opposite genres, tones and rhythms. I argue that this poetic and political form fulfils one of Frühromantik wishes, named “Roman”.
