It will be shown that, paradoxically, it is because plot has an undeniable –and probably universal–, power of attraction that it has been generally devalued in the field of literary studies, the latter being still largely influenced by an autonomy principle excluding everything that could pass for a commercial concession. The analysis of the critical reception of the novel by Ramuz Derborence (1934) will illustrate the tensions between different users of literature (professional readers, ordinary readers, the author) for whom the plot doesn’t possess the same value. The conclusion briefly outlines some ideas to reassert the value of plot by saying that it offers the reader a simulated and playful experience of time.
