Instead of reading Ma Bohême as a straightforward parody, notably of Théodore de Banville, the presence of Bertrand allows us to reflect on Rimbaud’s decision to compose this sonnet in verse, despite its theme of fantasy and wandering, on the growing appeal of the prose poem, to which Rimbaud will surrender in the years that follow, and on likely traces of Bertrand in Illuminations.
