AB  - By examining the main old women in Une vieille maîtresse and L'Ensorcelée, this study highlights the importance of the elderly woman in Barbey d'Aurevilly's work, and proposes that Barbey's novels be read as odes to the heroism of old age. Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir's theses in her essay La Vieillesse, this article shows how Barbey overturns a long tradition of misogyny and gerontophobia.
