AB  - While the author of À rebours is frequently praised for his novelistic modernity, this article takes an exhaustive look at his short fiction, from the two versions of Sac au dos (1877, 1880) to La Retraite de Monsieur Bougran (composed in 1888, but published posthumously in 1964). It aims to demonstrate that it is undoubtedly in the repeated practice of short works that both Huysmans’ Kafkaesque modernity and his acerbic black humor are best expressed.
