Gustave Flaubert et le théâtre DO - 10.15122/isbn.978-2-406-11244-0.p.0029 SN - 0035-2136 AB - Flaubert’s theatrical works recall the name of Bouilhet. But the two friends have a different relationship to this genre: the latter is a poet who writes plays in verse; the former sees the stage as a performance space. Flaubert became celebrated for his novels, but didn’t give up his passion for the stage. Through his sources and the genres used, féerie in particular, Flaubert is never far from the popular spectacle. This paradoxical taste as an artist may explain his ambivalence toward dramatic art.
