AB  - This article analyses the critical categories mobilised by certain masters of the art of letter-writing between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in order to propose a typology and hierarchy of letters. It shows that their theoretical efforts were every bit as good as the deductive processes of our present-day textual linguistics. Particular attention is paid to the introduction of Niccolò Perotti’s treatise, De componendis epistolis, which is then compared with the positions of Erasmus, Vivès, and Juste Lipse.
