The path from hagiography and the picturesque to realism was long. The most critical novels were not adapted before the end of the Second World War. Examples also abound of films inspired by novels or plays where the action takes place after 1918. It remains the case that all these films have toned down the horror of combat, which is at the forefront of the novels.
