AB  - This work examines the introduction of church discipline in Switzerland and Geneva through consistories. All consistories promoted piety and attacked a wide range of sins. They generally preferred persuasion over persecution in effecting changes in behavior, but did not hesitate to resort to punitive measures to foster morality. The Geneva’s Consistory, founded by Calvin, while had an important pedagogical role also wielded a power that most others did not have: the right to excommunicate.
