AB  - This article shows that the writings of the Abbé Suger (1122-1151) lend themselves particularly well to a study of the rapports between documentary constraints and historiographical writing, from the perspectives of re-use, reference, and authority. In the context of a project seeking to modernise the twelfth-century French royal biography, Suger emerges as a refined user of written documentation, whether this concerns archival documents or antique and sacred texts.
