It is instructive to compare these two sayings. In ways that surpass that of Erasmus, they both associate God and wolf. For Montaigne, men are both God and wolf inside a covenant: marriage. For Hobbes, politics makes all the difference: the covenants creating cities and the covenants between citizens define relations of friendship and hostility, depending on whether or not they are present and respected.
