The concepts of the sanguine-choleric and the melancholic-phlegmatic, which already pervaded their respective works when they met, paradoxically brought Bloy and Huysmans closer together. Built from the very beginning on this disparity of ethos, a friendship grew, until Huysmans’ hesitation on the threshold of Catholicism brutally drove a wedge between both men. Bloy then tirelessly denounced the cold-heartedness and the poor irony of the man of the Bear; Huysmans kept silent.
