AB  - This study replaces the little-contested genealogies of Claude-François Menestrier with an examination of the quarter in which he grew up, and questions the legend of his aristocratic ancestry by suggesting more working-class origins. This allows for a re-evaluation of the social origins of those who frequented the Jesuit colleges as well as those who entered the Society of Jesus. Social, even economic, history is thus a crucial resource for those attempting to reconsider areas relating to the history of mentalities.
