This ceremony, called Depositio, made use of a cross or a host to symbolize the dead Christ. Toward the 14th c., some churches replaced these objects with an articulated figure. Approximately at the same time, lay confraternities began commemorating Christ’s burial using similar articulated figures. The essays in this volume discuss these two ceremonies in various parts of medieval Europe.
